Fishing News

We had very solid fishing for most of the season on the Housatonic in 2011. During the spring we experienced a lot of rain which made the Housy high and unfishable on many days. During this time, however, I was able to float certain sections of the Farmington with great success. During the summer the bass fishing was slower than normal (we did not have any 50 fish days) but we did catch some very large bass on poppers which more than made up for lack of quantity. The Fall fishing, with the exception of September which was a complete wash out from Irene and other storms, ranged from good to excellent with streamers and nymphs. The dry fly fishing, in general, was poor in 2011 but I am confident that it will improve over the next couple of years. The low water of 2010 and the high water of 2011, in my opinion, did a number on the Housy's insect life. It will come back! The Farmington fished well all season long, despite the high water! When most anglers would not consider fishing the Farmington that is when it is best floated! The water, in general, remains clear when the water is up and can provide willing anglers with excellent streamer and nymph fishing and even dries in some of the larger, flat pools. During the heat of summer, the Farmington also produced for us with a variety of terrestrial patterns such as beetles, ants and hoppers. Between the Housy and the Farm, it is a rare situation when the fishing is not good on one of them. Thanks to all my clients who helped me have one of my best guide seasons to date! See you in 2012....it should be a great year!!!

Upcoming Trips and Slide Presentations

I will be at The Bedford Sportsman (www.bedfordsportsman.com) on Sat. Jan 14th from 12 noon to 5pm and at the COmpleat Angler (www.compleat-angler.com) on Feb 11 from 10am to 3pm. In both cases I will be tying my "Go To" flies for the Housatonic and Farmington. My patterns are "guide flies" that are simple and easy to tie. After tying for a couple of hours I will then show you the lodges and outfitters that I represent in both Chile and Argentina. Fishing in Patagonia is magical and I will explain to you in detail why this particular destination is so popular. On Sat. Feb 4th I will be doing much of the same at the Connecticut Fly Fishermans Associations annual Expo in South Windsor.
